A woman has been arrested for smuggling a phone to her boyfriend in a prison in Abeokuta.

Fatima Balogun, 33, wrapped the phone in a cellophane bag and dropped it inside a cooler of soup she brought for her lover who was in prison.

The mother of 2 was arrested by officers attached to Special Intelligence Unit of the Nigeria Prison Service.

The divorcee claimed she lived in Fagba, Iju-Saga area of Lagos State and that she met her boyfriend Ganiyu Ajibode, who has remanded for armed robbery, two years ago. Ajibode has been in prison for over 6 months.

The suspect said: "I hid the phone inside the stew because I knew they would not allow me to take it to him in the Prison. I did not know it was bad. I wrapped it in a cellophane bag. We have been together for 2 years. I live with my father, having been abandoned by my husband who left me with 2 children. I regret my action and I plead for forgiveness".

Speaking on the incident, the Controller of Prisons, Ogun State command, Benson Abolade, said Fatima’s move was against the Prison operation and that her action was a threat to national security.

The Prisons boss said the woman would be handed over to the Police for prosecution so as to serve as a deterrent to others.
