After she had finished cooking, she took a small mat and a pillow and spread it outside to receive fresh air.

She never knew that would be last day on earth.

Modupe Bankole died from injuries sustained after a concrete balcony of a 20-room storey building collapsed on her in the Olomore area of Abeokuta, the Ogun state capital.

The 51-year-old was said to have been rushed to the hospital but later died despite medical attention.

Modupe and her family have been residing in the building for 12 years before the incident.

Her Husband, Samuel - a school teacher, explained he was preparing his lesson note when the incident happened. He said he equally escaped death by whiskers.

He said, “The owner of the building died about two and half years ago and the house is being managed by a caretaker.

“My wife told me that she was going to prepare food. After she had finished cooking, she took a small mat and a pillow and spread it out to take fresh air.

“I was preparing my lesson note that time. I told her that when I finished writing, I would join her.

“My last born came back from his place of apprenticeship and even slept beside the mother. He later left to see a friend. Shortly after, I heard the sound of the collapsed balcony.

"I believe my wife was hit by broken blocks from the structure.”

The Permanent Secretary in the Ogun State Ministry of Urban and Physical Planning, Mrs. Yetunde Dina, who visited the scene of the incident, said the state government will investigate what caused the collapse.
