The Rivers State Commissioner for Information and Communications in the government of Governor Nyesom Wike, Austin Tam George has resigned his appointment.

George's resignation came a few hours after Wike sacked the State Commissioner of Works, Harrison Iheanyichukwu.

The development comes a little over a year after Iheanyichukwu took over from Kevin Wachukwu, who was also sacked.

The sack takes immediate effect.

A statement issued on Thursday by Governor Wike’s Special Assistant on Electronic Media, Simeon Nwakaudu, directed the former commissioner to hand over to the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Works.

No reason was given for his immediate removal.

Since he took office in May 2015, Wike has sacked many members of his cabinet.

In February, he fired the commissioner for health, Theophilus Ndagene.
