Why Ondo Youths Demand Withdrawal Of BEDC Operational License
Youths in Ondo City appeared to have been pushed to the wall over the poor supply of electricity in their domain and have decided to occupy the frontline in correcting this societal ill.
While their counterparts in other regions are already celebrating over 10 hours power supply daily, Ondo youths say they have been unfairly treated with less than three hours power supply daily.
Having endured the arch condition that has threatened their survival, they felt it was time to stand their ground and call the bluff.
In a street protest across the town, the protestants under the aegis of Ekimogun Youths Congress demanded for the immediate withdrawal of the operational license of Benin Electricity Distribution Company.
Speaking on behalf of the group, Eric Famogun said they had written many letters of complaint to the company without any positive development.
"BEDC under the management of Mrs. Funke Osibodu has been treating us poorly in Ondo. This is one of the commercial nerves centres of Ondo but we don't have light to do our businesses.
"Light has improved tremendously in other part of the state but here, we make do with less than three hours light per day and they keep giving us outrageous bill every month.
"Despite series of complaint letters to the company, nothing was done to improve the supply neither was the bill adjusted. We therefore call on government to withdraw it's operational license with immediate effect."
Another member of the group, Ilesanmi Ayoola disclosed that the situation has run him and several people out of business.
"My work depends on light and what ought to have been my profit always go for fuel every time. That is why I abandoned it for okada business. There are other people in my shoe that are no more in business because of light issue."
