Why My First Business Failed- Sanwo-Olu
While his résumé often starts profiling him as a former banker and three-time commissioner in Lagos State, the Guber candidate for the All Progressive Congress, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has revealed that there is more to him than many people know.
Speaking at the Vibranium Valley in Lagos on Friday, Sanwo-Olu revealed that he has had course to work in several locations across Nigeria including the creeks in the Niger Delta as well as the now stronghold of Boko Haram in the North East.
The Lagos APC Governorship Candidate actually shared his experience as a start-up business owner and went further to reveal why the business did not succeed.
“A lot of people don’t know that I have worked in places like Chad, Kukawa… places where they call the Boko Haram territories now, I have worked there as a young 23-24 year old person and we use to stay in things like containers in the desert back then”
On his failed start in business, Sanwo-Olu said: “I think it was in 1991 or 1992 thereabout , we started a business called ‘Dial A Plumber’”
“Though it was innovative idea as getting plumbers at that time was somehow difficult; you never know where and how to get them (plumbers) but guess what; we crashed within six-seven months of establishment.”
Sanwo-Olu while analyzing why his first business failed reckoned that the idea of Dial A Plumber’ was tailored around telephone lines and back then telecommunication services were very poor.
“The major thing we needed for people to be calling us were the telephone lines, but our lines were not working so nobody could reach us,” he noted.
He continued: “The other aspect of the failure that we did not realize early was that I was coming from a background where I like things prim and proper so our office was looking more like a bank than a place rendering plumbing services. We were pumping more money to marketing than getting more plumbing equipment”
The Lagos APC Governorship candidate said he has learnt a whole lot from humbling experience like this and has since moved on to be a shrewd business man with ideas that provides solutions and brings in good returns.
