It is always advisable to look before you leap, and that also means knowing someone enough before giving them your body.
For 21-year-old Amudalat Taiwo, she fell in love, perhaps with the wrong person, and got pregnant for him.
After giving birth, she was all alone with her baby, with a huge responsibility staring her in the face.
Too big for her to handle, she allegedly dumped the 12-day old baby into a pit latrine in Ilaro, Yewa axis of Ogun State.
The tragic incident took place on Wednesday, June 20, 2018, at her rented home located at number 28 Isheri street.
The woman is now in the custody of the police, while the baby had been rescued and taken to the Stella Obansanjo motherless babies’ home in Abeokuta.
Spokesman of Ogun State Police Command, Abimbola Oyeyemi, says the baby is in a stable condition at the motherless babies’ home.
Oyeyemi explains that the woman was arrested, after her landlord, Oshunshina Olawale, alerted the police that he heard the cry of a baby inside the pit toilet.
A police team led by the divisional police officer of the Ilaro police division, Opebiyi Sunday, rushed to the house, broke the latrine, rescued the baby and arrested her mother.
According to Oyeyemi, the suspect had allegedly confessed that she is an orphan, married to one Taiwo Owolabi, who was already married to another woman and have five children.
He says the woman, during interrogation, allegedly confessed that she decided to do away with the baby, because her husband was not taking care of her.
The suspect’s husband, according to Oyeyemi, has been arrested, for failure to provide necessary care.
The case has been transferred to the anti-human trafficking and child labour unit of state criminal investigation and intelligence department, for further investigation.
