Why Buhari’s Government May Find It Difficult Closing Seme Border
There has been talk or rather threats by President Buhari’s administration to close the Seme border over incessant smuggling activities across the border.
That would have nipped the problem of smuggling in the bud but there is a problem, Seme border is one of the Federal government’s money spinners.
Take for instance, in the month of July alone, Seme Customs Command generated over half a billion naira in revenue.
Specifically, the command generated 575.6 million naira in July 2018.
The Controller of Seme Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Comptroller Mohammed Aliyu, gave this figure on Wednesday in Lagos.
He said the revenue represented about 85% of the monthly target set for the command.
He also said the anti-smuggling operations unit of the command made 91 seizures with a Duty Paid Value (DPV) of 130.8 million naira in the period under review.
He said the seizures included Fire Spice Gin with a 42% concentrate of alcohol and over 2,000 cartons of gin concealed in a truck with a Duty Paid Value of over 13 million naira.
He noted that officers of the command were determined to secure the border against illicit trade considered harmful to the health and well-being of the citizens.
