The eyes are vital organs that bring light to the entire body and every individual should do his/her best to maintain them.

Lutein is a nutrient that is important for the eye and going after this component in what we eat will be to our advantage.

What we eat plays a role in keeping our eyes healthy and an ophthalmologist, Dr. Aliyu Daware, on Thursday says lutein could be gotten from vegetables and colourful fruits.

They help in keeping the eye in good condition during old age, he said.

Daware told the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja that losing of sight at old age could be avoidable.

"Some people just believe that as you are getting old such things are bound to happen, but eating green vegetables is the best way for people to protect their eyesight and stay off vision problems later in life," he said.

“When it comes to the eyes, there’s no getting away from it, you have to take it seriously and those greens vegetables contain a pigment that will protect retinal cells from damage caused by ageing and light.

“You know as we age, we experience a decrease in the strength of the muscles of our eyelids, it becomes weaker, the ophthalmologist stated.

One vital thing he also pointed out was that eating well remained the first way to take care of the eyes and help reduce risk of eye disease.

Consuming natural foods with high content of vitamins which are mostly found in vegetables is better than taking tablets with same nutrients, he highlighted.

Vegetables and fruits with high vitamin A and other vital vitamins he recommends are spinach, kale, carrots, sweet potatoes, oranges, mango and strawberries (the last three fruits provide vitamin C and other antioxidants which also help fight eye disease).
