South Africa on Saturday defeated Burkina Faso 3-1 and renewed their hope of qualifying for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

The Bureau for the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers had ordered a replay of the qualification match between South Africa and Senegal held on 12 November 2016. Bafana Bafana won the tie 2-1.

But South Africa, on Saturday went ahead through Percy Tau in the first minute, before Themba Zwane doubled their lead in the 33rd minute.

South Africa stretched their lead in the 45th minute through Sibusiso Vilakazi, but Burkina Faso reduced the deficit in the 87th minute when Alain Traore scored.

Bafana Bafana now has 4 points from 4 matches, with 2 games in hand.

They will replay the game against Senegal in November, a decision that follows the confirmation of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to uphold the lifetime ban of match referee, Joseph Lamptey, for match manipulation. The ruling was imposed by the FIFA Disciplinary and Appeal Committees.

The match will be replayed within the November 2017 international window, with the exact date to be confirmed in due course.
