The Football fans were watching the Europa League match between Manchester United and Anderlecht when tragedy struck.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the incident happened at around 9.30 p.m. at Nyagasang area of Atimbo in Calabar Municipality Local Government Area.
A transformer near the viewing centre had exploded during the match and caused a high-tension cable to drop directly on the viewing centre.
It was raining and the explosion triggered panic, which must have led to stampede while some others were electrocuted.
The viewing centre was constructed with zinc, which is a heavy conductor of electricity.
The television screen was also destroyed.
An eye witness, who was part of persons watching the match, explained that when the transformer exploded the first time, it brought so much panic and tension.
"We were all inside watching the match when we heard the first strike from the transformer; the heavy sound caused panic because some people shouted and ran out.
"After a while, we came back into the viewing centre to continue with the match. Shortly, we heard another sound heavy sound and when some people tried to run away from the centre, they were affected.
"Over 50 of us escaped death yesterday because we were standing by the door watching the game," he said.
ASP Irene Ugbo, an ASP and the Police Public Relations Officer of Cross River Police Command, confirmed the incident and said that investigation had commenced.
"We have heard of the incident, some of the people were rushed to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital for treatment," she said.
