Update: Ondo NUJ Condemns Attack On Members
No doubt, politicians in Ondo State appeared to be gradually invoking the wrath of journalists.
These newsmen are threatening to exercise their rights if politicians and their cronies decide to throw caution to the wind.
Their warning is coming on the heels of the dastardly attack meted on some of their members at the venue of the state congress organised by factional members of the APC.
In a statement signed by the State Secretary of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Leke Adegbite, the union expressed displeasure over the failure of security operatives to arrest any of the political thugs.
"We call on Security agencies to do everything humanly possible to bring to justice the political thugs who molested our journalists at the venue of the congress held at BTO hall, Ilesha road, Akure.
"If nothing is done to bring these perpetrators to justice, we as journalists will have no other option than to prove that the power of pen is mightier than sword." The statement read in part.
It will be recalled that some political thugs armed with dangerous weapons invaded venue of the parallel APC state congress on Saturday and beat up some journalists.
Among the journalists who were attacked are: Tunde Adedayo of Trace Magazine, Damisi Ojo of The Nation, Bamigbola Gbolagunte of Daily Sun, Sunkanmi Elujoba of Adaba FM and James Sowole of This Day.
Narrating his ordeal to Bounce News, Sunkanmi Elujoba said it was a horrible experience.
"Nobody ever believed or expected it would happen that way. I was already building up my story when I heard a commotion from the outside. And before we could find out what is happening, the hoodlums have already descended on us.
"We were even trying to explain to them that we are journalists and not politicians, but it seems they don't even know the difference between the two words. They really beat us."
The state chairman of the union, James Sowole who was also among the attacked journalists, said:
"If the matter is swept under the carpet by the security agents, then we will also prove to them that, we too have our own way of fighting back."
