UPDATE: ‘Area Boys’ Take Over Abakaliki Market During Demolition
Hoodlums have taken advantage of the ongoing demolition and reconstruction of the Abakaliki regional market to rob and loot traders of their valuables.
A victim, Chukwuemeka Iruah, in a chat withBounce News, shared his ordeal.
The trader, who runs a beer palour, said he was attacked by hoodlums who almost sniffed life out of him.
Chukwuemeka said the men of the underworld cashed in on the demolition to rob him of his money and other valuables.
He appealed to the Ebonyi State government to ensure the security of the property of the traders amidst the ongoing market demolition and reconstruction.
According to him, the miscreants also threatened to kill him should he disclose the incident to anyone.
“I was here last night when ‘Area Boys’ besieged me and collected my money from me.
“They collected three hundred and fifty thousand naira(N350,000.00) from me.
“I was just passing within the market when they attacked me and collected my money. They also collected my two refrigerators which I use for my business.
“I sell drinks in the regional market. When they came, I did not say anything to them.
“They also threatened to kill me if I report the matter to anyone. I have not reported to the police yet”, he lamented.
The regional market located at Spera-In-Deo junction was a beehive of activities for both traders and sex workers.
But the Ebonyi State government has demolished the market with a view to giving the state capital a face-lift.
The regional market is now a shadow of itself. The state government had directed the demolition of the shanties, which has turned the area to a slum.
