A lecturer at the University of Benin has been shot dead by armed robbers at his residence.

Dr. Godwin Omofonwa of the Department of Education, was shot in the early hours of Wednesday at his Evbuomore quarters.

The robbers dispossessed him and others of their belongings.

According to Edo State Commissioner of Police, Babatunde Johnson Kokumo, one of the robbers was killed during a gun battle with the police, while five others escaped.

He said three mobile phones belonging to Omofonwa and a Nokia phone belonging to one Precious were recovered from the deceased suspect.

“Sadly, one Dr. Godwin O. Omofonwa, a lecturer in the Department of Education, University of Benin, died as a result of gunshot wounds he received from the robbers."

The commissioner said other items recovered from the robbers include a single-barrel gun, iron cutter, one live and 12 expended cartridges and a torch.
