Cristiano Ronaldo is not having the best of seasons at least by his standards but the Portuguese star is on a roller coaster as far as the Champions League is concerned.

Rolando netted a brace on Tuesday night as Real Madrid crushed Apoel Nicosia 6-0 and that took his tally to 18 goals in the calendar year; a feat no other player has ever achieved in Europe's biggest club competition.

The result sends Madrid through but they will be settling for second place, with Tottenham’s 2-1 win over Borussia Dortmund securing top spot in Group H with one match to play.

Ronaldo is curiously misfiring in the LaLiga this season, scoring just a single goal in eight appearances, but in Europe there has been no sign of such a drought.

His tally for this season is eight goals in five group games, adding to the 10 he scored in the knockout phase of last year's competition, including a double against Juventus in the final.

Ronaldo's fiercest rival Lionel Messi's personal best is 13, a record he has posted twice in 2016 and 2012.
