Jurgen Klopp returns to Germany as he leads Liverpool to a UEFA Championship League playoff first leg tie against Hoffenheim on Tuesday.

Born in Stuttgart, West Germany, Klopp coached Borussia Dortmund for seven years – 2008 to 2015, before joining Liverpool.

With Germany a familiar terrain, and Hoffenheim a usual foe, the onus is on Klopp to ensure Liverpool begin their European campaign on a positive note.

Klopp will be expected to repeat his fortune two seasons ago where he led Liverpool to victories against Augsburg and former club Borussia Dortmund en route to the Europa League final.

In terms of scoring, Liverpool will seek inspiration from the three goals scored against Watford in the English Premier League season opener, but the Merseyside club needs to avoid conceding.

Hoffenheim is not a pushover, and just like Liverpool, they finished fourth in the Bundesliga last season.

Hoffenheim are aware of Klopp’s technical abilities, and even if they have been faded by the exit of Sebastian Rudy and Niklas Suele to Bayern Munich, a fixture against an ‘old boy’ promises to be exciting.
