TWO Disturbing Revelations About New Lagos Commissioner of Police
It is no longer news that Mr Imohimi Edgal has been removed as the Commissioner of Police in Lagos.
He resumes at the Force Headquarters in Abuja as the Commissioner of Police in charge of the Explosives Ordinance Unit.
The new Acting Commissioner of Police in charge of Lagos Police Command is DCP Kayode Egbetokun.
He leaves his post as the Commandant, Nigeria Police College, Ikeja Lagos to take up the new appointment
His appointment has been raising some questions not for incompetence as his profile shows he has enormous experience that qualify him for the job.
He also has a high level of education and academic achievements that would make some university lecturers grin with envy.
Here are the disturbing revelations that make his appointment a bit suspicious, particularly for politicians who are not APC members.
1. He is former CSO to APC's Bola Tinubu
As a Deputy Superintendent of Police in 1999, Kayode Egbetokun was appointed the Chief Security Officer to the Governor of Lagos State.
Guess who the governor was... APC national chairman, Bola Tinubu.
In that capacity, he coordinated the security of the entire state while reporting to the governor.
The level of fairness in the police and the genuineness of the reasons for Edgal’s removal just weeks to the elections have come to the fore.
Will Egbetokun be left to oversee the forthcoming elections? If yes, should Lagosians be worried about the 2019 polls being free and fair?
2. Accused of impunity as Police College Commandant
In 2015, Mr Egbetokun became the Commandant of the Nigeria Police College, Ikeja Lagos.
He has been accused of instituting and completing eight batches of recruit courses and three batches of refresher courses without approval from the police headquarters in Abuja.
Consequently, at least 440 trainees had graduated from the refresher courses without receiving decoration, since their batches were never approved.
That is definitely not a good report if true. PDP’s Reno Omokri has already jumped on this part of Egbetokun’s career and it might just get a little messy.
However, the burden is on Mr Egbetokun to prove his doubters wrong and earn the trust of Lagosians as the 2019 general elections get closer.
