TRAGEDY! Truck Falls On Traders In Rivers' Market
Trembling as tears trickle down her cheeks, a young girl who identified herself as Tokuanne Ofori, shares a sad story with Bounce News.
"We were all busy this morning by the side of the road attending to our numerous customers," she began, having to pause at intervals, as she sobs.
She explained that while some of them sold vegetables and tomatoes, others sold ice fish, periwinkle and garri."
Still sobbing, Tokuanne continued: "I was happy making early morning sales when all of a sudden, I heard a loud thud.
"It sounded just once and people started running into the market, away from the road".
She quickly joined others in the race, but stopped at some point to find out why they were running.
The sight of people at the scene made her realise that there had been an accident.
What she didn't know, however, was that her colleagues, whom she exchanged greetings with that morning, were some of the victims.
A trailer conveying a caravan had fallen on some of the traders and their customers.
The unfortunate incident which took place at Oyingbo market in Oyingbo Local Government Area of Rivers State left people in shock.
Weeping and rolling on the ground, female traders mourned the sudden demise of their colleagues.
A butcher popularly called Papa Emma blamed the accident on the deplorable state of the road.
Meanwhile, a police officer, who didn't want her name mentioned, toldBounce News that "it is either the driver of the trailer was half asleep while driving or his brake failed.
"The corpse of some victims were removed from the side of the trailer".
While people cry and express sadness over the tragedy, the driver of the truck was nowhere to be found. He had abandoned the truck and disappeared.
At least three dead persons have been removed from under the truck and many fear there could be more persons under.
The accident occurred on a day that the Peoples Democratic Party is holding its national convention in the state.
If you have friends and family members around the market or who go to this market, it will be great to call them and be sure they are safe. Don't forget to share the story with your friends too.
