Traders Scamper For Safety As Soldiers, Police Clash In Aba
There was tension at Osisioma junction axis of Aba, the commercial city of Abia State on Friday, as men of the Mobile Police Force and the military who are camped at Ngwa high school, clashed.
The clash, which turned bloody, saw one of the mobile police men sustain injury at the point of death from the gunshot of the military men.
According to an eyewitness, the clash started at Oando filing station located at Osisioma junction in Osisioma LGA, Abia State and caused traders and passerby to scamper for safety.
“The incident started at Oando filling station, although I don’t really know what caused the fight, but all I know is that the military and the policemen exchanged gunshot. The incident caused all of us to close down our shops and run away for our dear lives.”
Another eyewitness, a Keke (tricycle) operator, said he doesn’t really know exactly what caused the fight, but hearing the gunshots made him to scamper for safety and abandon his Keke.
Mr. Obinna, a craftsman who specializes in canopy making disclosed that “the fight started at Oando filing station on the other side of the road, but before you knew it, the military started shooting at the mobile policemen stationed at Osisioma junction by the old expressway along Enugu, Aba/Port Harcourt expressway – one of the mobile policemen was shot at the hand and leg, by the military.
“We all ran away and as of now, we are still living in fear, because the mobile policemen seem like they wanted to retaliate,” Mr. Obinna concluded.
Reacting over the clash, the Abia State government, Governor Okezie Ikpeazu has ordered investigation into what really caused the fight.
The governor in a statement released by the state commissioner for information, John Okiyi Kalu, urged the public to go about their businesses, assuring that the state government will not rest until it unravels those behind the breach of public peace.
Part of the statement read: “Abia State Government received with sadness disturbing reports of an unfortunate confrontation between a group of soldiers and police officers at the Osisioma area of Aba earlier today.
“We are working with the heads of the concerned security agencies in the state to ensure that the situation, which has been brought under control, does not repeat itself or escalate within the state.
“Governor Okezie Ikpeazu has also directed full investigation of the circumstances that led to the breach of public peace with a view to preventing future occurrence of such armed confrontation that endanger the lives of innocent citizens and security agents working in the state.
“While we are currently working with law enforcement agencies to review the immediate and remote cause of the incidence, members of the public are advised to go about their normal duties as the situation around the area has been pacified.
“Those responsible for this breach of public peace will certainly be unraveled and punished according the law.''
