This Ondo Physically Challenged Community Needs Help
Residents of Ago Ireti in Akure have been abandoned and are crying for help from the state government.
Ago Ireti, which literally means the camp of hope, is a community of deformed people across Ondo State who depend solely on hand outs from the state government and philanthropists for survival.
But since the emergence of governor Rotimi Akeredolu, things have not really been the same for them.
Even their children who usually secure automatic employment in the state upon graduation, are now in the labour market, looking for job opportunities.
Their plight was made known recently when a son of the Anglican Bishop of Akure Diocese, Toluwani Borokini visited their camp with some goodies that rekindle their hope.
Speaking on behalf of the community, the secretary, Mr. Tunji Oluwatimilehin who appreciated the intervention of their guest, spoke on the litany of challenges confronting them.
"The Ago Ìrètí community needs urgent attention by the government.
“We have some challenges and we have written to the governor. The state government has abandoned us here and we have been surviving through the grace of God.
"A lot of our children who are graduates have no job. It has never been happening to us in the past.
"Even if we are to be abandoned by the government, we will be happy if our children are employed. Some of our workers too are retired" he said.
The visitor who also came with members of his support group consoled them and urged them to put their hope in God in times like this.
He also promised to extend his hand of generosity as at when due.
A top government official in the state who spoke in confidence confirmed the receipt of their letter.
"The state government is trying to put in place a permanent scheme that will alleviate their suffering.
"We don't want to be giving them fish again but teach them how to fish so that with or without government, they will stand on their own."
For now, no one seems to know the exact length of time it will take a man with no hands to catch a fish in the river.
