America was thrown into mourning on Sunday after a gunman opened fire on a small South Texas community church.

At least 26 people were killed and about 20 others injured in the attack.

The suspected shooter, identified as former airman Devin Kelley, died after a car chase but it was unclear at the time, how he died.

But it has now been revealed that the shooter was shot dead by a man who lives a block away and who was a neighbour to many of the victims.

Stephen Willeford told Sky News he is no hero, he was just thinking of the victims of Devin Kelley.

“The people in that church, they’re friends of mine, they’re family and every time I heard a shot I knew that it probably represented a life.

“I was scared to death, I was. I was scared for me, I was scared for every one of them.

“I was scared for my own family that just live less than a block away.

“I’m no hero. I am not. I think my God; my Lord protected me and gave the skills to do what needed to be done.

“I just wish I could have gotten there faster but I didn’t know what was happening.”
