Tension In Rivers Community Over Abandoned Dead Baby, 20 Arrested
20 persons have been arrested over the discovery of a dead newborn abandoned at a refuse dump in Diobu, Rivers State.
Police arrived the scene of the incident on Sunday, specifically at Kalahari/Udi Street, Mile 1, Diobu, Port Harcourt, and arrested people whose building were close to where the baby was dumped.
Bounce News reliably gathered that the baby was abandoned in the wee hours of Sunday by the yet to identified nursing mother who perpetrated the act to avoid being noticed.
It was not ascertained immediately if the new born was killed and dumped by the run-away mother or whether the baby naturally died before being dumped.
It was gathered that upon arrival, police arrested the suspects before taking the baby’s corpse away.
The baby was found at 8.00am, but the police came around 1.00pm with their van and began arrest.
Some of the residents who spoke to Bounce News said they were shocked by the development.
They said the police arrested people that were returning from the church, together with some taxi drivers, who were loading their vehicles, and some residents inside their houses.
Residents who said they called the police to inform them of the incident, expressed shock over the decision of the police to carry out mass arrests.
Those who have returned to their homes claim they bailed themselves with N15,000 each.
