Now that a video on drug abuse is being circulated, more and more efforts are on to check the menace that is gradually putting youths in Nigeria in chains.

Madness and near madness were demonstrated in the video that showed the illicit business of distributors.

In Nasarawa, the case may not be far from what is in the video and a traditionalist is stepping in.

Mahmood Umar is the Sangarin Shabu in Nasarawa State advised youths to shun drug abuse and other social vices due to their negative effects on the society.

Umar gave the advice in Lafia on Wednesday during a sensitisation campaign against drug abuse among youths organised by Shabu Youths Movement in Nasarawa State.

The traditional ruler, who was represented by Madaki Shabu, Musa Shuaibu, said that drug abuse and other social vices had affected education of many Nigerian youths and the society negatively.

Umar called for stringent laws on drug abuse to check the menace.

“Drug abuse is taking a drug not prescribed by experts. Youths, women and other Nigerians must shun drug abuse,’’ he said.

Umar expressed concern that the trend was taking a dangerous dimension, noting that there should be a collective fight to nip drug abuse in the bud.

The traditional ruler advised the government and other relevant stakeholders to come up with laws that would deal decisively with drug dealers and the victims.

He commended the association for organising the sensitisation campaign, saying that the campaign would go a long way in educating youths about the dangers of drug abuse.

this is coming on a day that the Nigeria’s Ministry of Health directed the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control to ban with immediate effect further issuance of permits for the importation of codeine as active pharmaceutical ingredient for cough preparations.

This will deprive many access to codeine, but may also lead to the discovery of other forms of combination that could work like the drug with opioids.

Codeine is an opiate used to treat pain, as a cough medicine, and for diarrhoea.
