"It is time we stop being emotional in Nigeria. I am a realist and I believe only proven facts that cannot be contested.

"Someone claims 3 million bottles of codeine are consumed daily here in Kano and Jigawa state and we believe without asking for details".

That's according to the Commander of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency in Kano, Hamza Umar (OON).

He made this known in an exclusive chat with Bounce News in the state capital.

Hamza also wondered why no one was asking the originators of the claim to come forward with evidence.

"Does anyone know the production capacity of licensed pharmaceuticals making cough syrup locally?

"Does anyone have records of the amount of codeine brought into the country monthly, weekly, yearly?

"If anyone was being sincere, then that person would know that we do not produce 3 million bottles of codeine daily in Nigeria neither do we import that amount into the country.

"3 million daily is a large amount which means refuse dump sites around both cities should be filled with the empty bottles."

Umar also advised the media to fact check claims made by individuals and institutions before broadcasting and sharing such allegations.

He also gave some insight into new methods adopted by regulatory agencies to end cases of drug abuse in the state.

"It is not enough for us to say NDLEA should go and catch them (suspects).

"It's time for the people to come on board and help with information about their activities while rebuilding our moral values as a people.

"We have so much to lose if we do not fight together. NDLEA's duty is not to arrest you for holding a bottle of cough syrup without a prescription.

"It is our duty to intervene when there is an abnormally in the distribution channel run by the pharmaceuticals in line with the rule of law."
