Hoodlums suspected to be cultists have laid siege on residents of some areas in Oshodi Local government area of Lagos State.

Oshodi has been notorious for harbouring all manner of people including social miscreants.

But in recent times, the community woes have become greater with the presence of cult groups who have been terrorising the residents with their frequent clashes.

Scores of people have been injured after suspected cultists unleashed terror in the area in the last one week.

The incidents happened between Monday, July 9 and Sunday July 15, 2018.

The intervention of men from Akinpelu and Makinde Police stations had, in the past, brought the situation under control.

The situation has, however, caused tension in the community as residents now live in fear since the clashes between the cult groups have became too frequent to bear.

Mostly affected areas include Arowojobe, Afariogun, Ogunoloko, Oshodi Road  and several other streets within Oshodi.

Most businesses in the affected areas now close their doors as early as 6pm.

A resident who gave his name as Lanre Oseni lamented  that the cult boys have turned the community into a fiefdom of terror and horror.

He noted that these hoodlums who brandish machetes and guns as well as other dangerous weapons move in droves of 20-30, intimidating residents from street to street.

He said, “This is an area that people stay outside their houses until 12am but all that is gone now., We no longer stay outside after 8pm.

“They wear black, cover their faces and move in groups. They brandish knives, guns and other dangerous weapons, forcing people to leave for their homes early.”

“On Sunday, these hoodlums raided my street, Alimi Oke Street and other streets in the area, collecting hand bags from women, men and extorting money and other valuables.

“These people suspected to be cultists similarly, entered shops and other business centres and carted away property worth several hundreds of thousands.

Another victim, Omowunmi Akande said she was almost stabbed in the face while struggling with some of the gang members who forcefully collected her pouch containing N20,000.

It was learnt that several vehicles were damaged and vandalized during Sunday’s attack.

Bounce News further gathered that the cultists also stormed the popular Owoseni Primary School playing field on Sunday looking for some people to maim and kill.

Investigation revealed that the gang members, who came from the Oshodi Road area of the community, were suspected to be members of the Aiye Confraternity. They reportedly came for some members of the Eiye Confraternity, a rival group.

An eyewitness, who prefered not to disclose his identity for security reasons, said several people were injured as they scampered for safety to escape the attack.

He said the cultsists fired several gunshots into the air as people were climbing the fence to escape to the other side of the field.

When Bounce News contacted the Police Public Relations Officer, Chike Oti on phone on Thursday, he confirmed the disturbances but said everything has been brought under control.
