The list of young Nigerians losing their lives in the course of serving their fatherland is swelling by the day.

The Minister of Youth and Sports Solomon Dalung has expressed shock at the death of 7 Corps members who reportedly drowned last week in Taraba state.

The incident occurred in Gashaka local council area where some corps members went for a picnic and reportedly drowned in a river.

The state NYSC coordinator, Mrs. Florence Yaakugh, confirmed the deaths.

A witness said 22 Corps members held a picnic at a river side called Mayo Selbe. Nine of them reportedly fell into the river and got missing after an upsurge in water level.

A day after, residents of the community launched a search party to look for them, they found 4 bodies and subsntly found another 3.

The witness said 2 of the nine are still missing.

The Minister has however expressed sadness at the mysterious death of the Corps members promising to launch an investigation.

“This is a very sad day for the nation and the National Youth Service Corps arm of the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

“I am indeed shocked by the news of the mysterious death of these Corps members who hitherto were having a picnic while serving their fatherland in Taraba.

“The incident is unfortunate and we will investigate the circumstances surrounding their sudden disappearance and death during a social activity.

“We wish to condole with their families, friends and fellow Corps members, especially the NYSC. We pray that God will in His infinite mercies grant the souls of the dead eternal rest.” Dalung said.
