STRANGE! 2 People Drown In Ebonyi Community River
It was not their first time using the canoe to return home from their farm.
But on this sad day, their lifeless bodies were recovered by local drivers two days after they were swept off by flood.
A student of Good Foundation Secondary School, Ezaka Nweke and a father of two, Christian Okoroafor were drowned while returning from their farm.
They sunk in Esu River in Okposi autonomous community in Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
The incident has thrown the community into mourning.
A village head, John Eke, who described matter as unfortunate said the victims were in a group of five.
He said they had earlier crossed to the other side of the River for farm activities and on their way back boarded a canoe which capsized, drowning two persons.
“The disaster befell the victims on their way in the course of crossing the river with canoe after farm activities on the fateful day.
“They were in a group of five persons who had earlier crossed to the other side of the river for cultivation.
“They later boarded a canoe shortly after their work, unluckily due to heavy flood, their canoe capsized with two of them drowned.
“The lifeless bodies of the victims were recovered two days later by some local swimmers.
“I advise all and sundry to steer clear of the river, especially those who are not good at swimming in this raining season to avoid re-occurrence. I appealed to the state government to construct a bridge on the River,” he begged.
His Royal Highness, Cosmas Nnaemeka appealed to parents and guardians to always monitor the movement of their children.
“I felt bad when I got the news of the tragic incident, but not withstanding in our usual manner of identifying with the bereaved, we have sent our condolence message to the victims’ family.
“I am appealing to the government of Chief Engineer David Umahi to construct a bridge in the area, because our farmlands lie across the river”, he told Bounce News.
