He never saw the bullet coming. Atume died while having lunch.

Ayew Atume was eating after returning from school in his parents' compound  when a bullet reportedly fired by soldiers attached to 707 Special Forces Brigade in Makurdi, Benue State, killed him immediately.

Fulani herdsmen have been pointed out as the source of all the violence.

Some members of a vigilante group in the community where Atume lives had intercepted a car conveying some suspected Fulani herdsmen.

The security guards were said to have found arms in the vehicle, which made them to detain the occupants.

A resident, who did not give his name, said the herdsmen alerted soldiers who allegedly freed the men,  while shooting continuously. It was in the process that Atume was hit by a stray bullet.

The spokesman for the 707 Special Forces Brigade in Makurdi, Major Olabisi Ayeni, denied  the claim that the pupil was killed by soldiers, adding that those rescued by soldiers were victims and not suspects.

He also accused the vigilante group of mounting illegal road blocks and harassing people in the community.
