Michael Obi, 34, committed the crime to raise money to settle the arrears of rent he was owing the landlady.

Obi had connived with his friend, Kelechi Ndukwu, who masterminded the kidnap to get ransom for the victims .

The outstanding sum that drove him into this act was 70,000 Naira.

The landlady and her son were later kidnapped on their farm in Umuike Alu Local Council Area of Rivers state.

The woman and her son were released 4 days later after 150,000 Naira was paid as ransom.

Obi was arrested after the woman reported the incident at the police station.

Upon being paraded, Obi said: “Things have been very difficult for me, so I mentioned this to my friend, Madman (Ndukwu) that I am owing my landlady and I needed N70,000 to settle the arrears of rent.

"He told me not to worry and said he would organise her abduction for ransom which would be used to settle the rent".

Obi explained that the abduction was carried out by Ndukwu, Ifeanyi Ezechukwu and Chinedu Amadi.

Police spokesman, Jimoh Moshood, said two of the suspects, Ezechukwu and Amadi were arrested at Umuanwa community in Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State.
