Refuse collectors did not know that one of the sacks they had picked up from a refuse dump near a market in Alagbado, Lagos State, had a baby inside it.

They had come to the dump site as usual and were taking the sacks of wastes into a refuse vehicle when the baby rolled out of one of the sacks.

The baby was already dead.

When the refuse collectors saw the baby, they raised alarm, drawing the attention of market men and women to the scene. One by one they gathered and how sad they were could be seen in the abuses and curses they ‘rained’ on the culprit.

Whether the child was dead or still alive before it was dumped there no one knew, but their concern was that a life had gone and was not given a befitting burial.

They must have concluded that since a refuse site is not a place for burial, the child may have been dumped there alive.

The News Agency of Nigeria quoted a policeman at the scene from Alagbado Police Station, who requested that he should not be named, that an investigation would be carried out to find out the culprit.

Minutes after the discovery was made, officials of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA came to the scene, removed the dead baby and deposited it at a mortuary.

Mrs Omolara Farounbi, the market Iya-Oloja (market leader), called on traders in the market to be more vigilant.

She said that the perpetrator was able to carry out the act because the traders cleaned up the market and packed refuse for disposal on Friday.

“It was convenient for the person to dump the baby in the sack overnight.

“We have informed the police and called the Lagos State Emergency Maintenance Authority (LASEMA) about the incident,’’ she added.
