Hell broke loose on Tuesday in Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State, as factions of the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria engaged in a free for all fight.

Several persons were reportedly wounded in the clash. There has been tension in RTEAN after the July 14 governorship election was won by Kayode Fayemi of the APC.

The crisis erupted on Tuesday when the police invited a former state RTEAN chairman and loyalist of Fayemi, Rotimi Olabiwonnu, for interrogation.

Some of his loyalists had misinterpreted his invitation as a ploy to detain him.

Those loyal to Olabiwonnu had been making efforts to take over the leadership in all RTEAN units from the incumbent chairman, Samuel Agbede, who was said to be a Fayose loyalist.

There were sounds of gunshots in Ijigbo, Old Garage and Okeyinmi areas of Ado Ekiti on Tuesday as the factions clashed.

Traders in the area and other locations within the state capital hurriedly closed their shops.

An eyewitness said some persons were wounded as people scampered to safety.

The state Commissioner of Police, Bello Ahmed, was said to have deployed his men in the town to restore law and order.
