The Nigerian Senate on Wednesday expressed worries over what it called unpreparedness of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) ahead of the 2019 general election.

Senator Godswill Akpabio, informed Senators on Wednesday that the electoral body was not handling the continuous Voters Registration Exercise as it should.

He wants the INEC to show readiness for the 2019 general election which another Senator Adeola Solomon, warned that the “time to prepare for that general election is now”.

“The INEC is not prepared. We shouldn't wait until 4 months to the election before running around,” Senator Solomon warned.

After deliberations on the issue the Senate asked the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to undertake the Continued Voters Registration exercise on a continuing and permanent basis in the respective polling unit until all prospective registrants are registered.

INEC is also required to decentralise the registration exercise on ward basis and further decentralise when the ward is large.

It, however, left the INEC with the right to decide what ward is considered large.

The Senate Committee on Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is to monitor the exercise and report progress and challenges periodically to the Senate.
