The Senate has approved the nominations of Rufus Akeju (Lagos) and Mahmuda Isah (Kebbi) as Resident Electoral Commissioners (REC) of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The legislators, however, rejected the nomination of Ahmad Bello Mahmud based on the recommendation of the Senate Committee on INEC headed by Senator Suleiman Nafiz.

Mahmud was alleged not to be an indigene of Zamfara State but Sokoto state.

Sen. Nafiz told the Senate there was a letter from Governor Abdulaziz Abubakar Yari of Zamfara State against the nominee.

He also noted that the nominee did not gain the support of political leaders in the state on the matter.

Two of three Zamfara State Senators had earlier kicked against Mahmud’s nomination.

The upper legislative house had in July confirmed 8 RECs for the commission.
