Uber officials have formally suspended self-driving car test on Monday

Tragedy struck in Arizona when a woman was hit and killed by a Sports Utility Vehicle.

The identity of the deceased is yet to be made public but her corpse has been deposited in a morgue.

She was crossing the street in Tempe when the self-driven vehicle failed to stop to recognise her presence.

Uber says it is cooperating with local authorities as investigation into the incident begins.

The death comes a year after Uber took its self-driving cars off the road following an accident that left a Volvo SUV on its side in Arizona.

Uber chief executive, Dara Khosrowshahi said the death was "incredibly sad news".

"We're thinking of the victim's family as we work with local law enforcement to understand what happened," he said in a tweet.
