School Closed As Bauchi Students Conduct Secret Weddings
Schools are expected to be safe learning environments for children but social interaction have been given a new meaning in Bauchi.
A school has been closed after it was discovered that some of its students were getting married!
Some senior male and female students of the school were said to have been conducting illegal marriages among themselves within the premises.
Male students were alleged to be paying token sums ranging from 500 Naira as dowry to their female counterparts for their hands in marriage. Classmates of the ‘grooms and brides’ contributed money to purchase snacks consumed at the ceremonies.
The discovery of the students’ ‘mock marriages’ was made at the Sa’adu Zungur Model School, a primary and secondary school located within the Bauchi metropolis.
It was learnt that a student in form 5 organized a wedding ceremony between him and his girlfriend. It was during the celebration that the teachers’ attention was drawn when they heard noises before they rushed to the venue.
The matter was later reported to the school principal, Ahmed Zailani who consulted the state Ministry of Education.
The government quickly responded by shutting down the school.
The order for the closure was issued by Yakubu Adamu, the Special Assistant on Communication to the state Deputy Governor and Commissioner of Education, Nuhu Gidado.
Gidado said a committee comprising all directors in the state Ministry of Education, the school authority, teachers as well as the Parents Teachers Association (PTA) of the school has been constituted to investigate the matter.
