Saraki Denies Senators Receive N3bn, Accuses Executive Of Corruption
The Nigerian Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, says claims that Senators receive 3 billion Naira yearly was not true.
The Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee against Corruption, Professor Itse Sagay, had alleged that a 'Nigerian Senator gets 29 million Naira in monthly pay'.
But the Senate has so far refused to clarify this or disclose the details of salaries and allowances of its members.
After Professor Sagay made the claim, a rights group, Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) demanded that the Senate President should explain if it was true.
SERAP then sought a meeting with Dr. Saraki and it was scheduled for Thursday.
Representatives of Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) were at the meeting and Dr. Saraki told them Professor Sagay's claim was not true.
At that meeting that started few minutes after 1:00p.m. at the National Assembly Complex, Saraki also put forward a claim against the Executive arm of government in defence.
Corruption is more in the Executive, he said, accusing the current administration that has waged war against corruption, even though the opposition Peoples Democratic Party still claims it is lop-sided.
The rights group had in its request to the Senate President insisted that “the sky will not fall’ if details of a Nigerian Senator’s salaries and allowances are published on a dedicated website.
SERAP believes that releasing the information on salaries and allowances of members of the Senate would encourage a nuanced, evidence-based public debate on what would or should be a fair salary for a member of the Senate".
