The year 2017 has been an eventful one for Super Eagles striker Henry Onyekuru in which he hugged the headlines in Belgium and was snapped up by Premier League side, Everton.

It was in the course of the outgoing year that Onyekuru also made his bow with Nigeria national team in which he expressed delight at a dream come true; sharing the same pitch with captain Mikel Obi.

Sadly, all those happy moments may have been evaporated following the horror injury suffered by Onyekuru last Friday in which medics have stated that he would have to undergo surgery.

Onyekuru will have to undergo a knee surgery after suffering a ligament injury in Anderlecht's 1-0 win over Eupen in the Belgian First Division A on Friday.

The Nigeria international now faces a long spell on the sidelines having been stretchered off the pitch in the 78th minute after a collision with Eupen goalkeeper Hendrik Van Crombrugge.

Anderlecht medical team confirmed that they contacted Onyekuru's parent club, Everton about his injury to determine where he would have the surgical operation.

''The medical staff of RSCA reports after extensive medical research that Henry Onyekuru has torn his medial bond. Onyekuru will soon be operated on,'' the Belgian champions wrote on their official website.

''The medical staff is in close contact with his parent club Everton to determine where the Nigerian will go under. ''

It is yet to be seen if this huge setback will affect the chances of Onyekuru making it to the Russia 2018 World Cup with Nigeria.
