Football fans, especially the elderly, really need to take things easy when supporting their teams.

A retired soldier in Akure has thrown his family into mourning after he slumped and died as South Africa defeated Nigeria in an Afcon qualifier on Saturday.

It was the Bafana Bafana's second goal that knocked the man out and he was rushed to a nearby hospital where he died.

The incident happened at the barracks where he had gone to watch the match with his friends.

The man was an ardent Eagles’ fan who earned himself the nickname ‘Mr Nigeria’ because of his public display of patriotism as he always had a Nigerian flag hanging on his motorcycle.

Patriotism is good but it is just not worth it, dying because of a football game, especially when Nigeria can still qualify for the Nations Cup.

The sad incident also highlights the need for citizens to be aware of their health status and take regular care.
