Super Eagles captain, John Obi Mikel, has not been in the best of forms in his last four matches for Nigeria.

The reason is apparently because he was being played out of his position where he performs better.

Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr played Mikel in the offensive midfield role rather than his usual holding midfield position.

The 31-year-old appeared out of sorts on Saturday playing behind lone striker Odion in the 2-0 defeat to Croatia in their Russia 2018 World Cup opening clash.

Jose Mourinho, who signed a teenage Mikel to Chelsea in 2006, and converted him from an attacking midfielder to a defensive midfield, has agreed with those calling for the Tianjin TEDA star to be deployed in a deeper role.

“Nigeria lost a good No.6 to get a bad No.10.” Mourinho said on the Russian TV station RT, where he is working as a World Cup pundit.

Nigeria need an outright victory over Iceland to revive any hope of qualifying for the second round.
