Senegal beat Poland 2-1 to secure the first victory for an African country after first round of matches at the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Four African teams – Egypt, Morocco, Nigeria and Tunisia, had played and lost their opening games before Senegal took to the pitch on Tuesday.

Thiago Cionek’s 37th minute own goal had put Senegal ahead and in the lead into half time.

The West Africans doubled their lead on the hour mark when Mbaye Niang took advantage of a back pass and beat goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny before slotting the ball into an empty net.

Poland got a late consolation goal through Grzegorz Krychowiak’s 86th minute header.
