Russia 2018: Ronaldo Crashes Out With Portugal
Edison Cavani was the main man on Saturday night; scoring two goals that gave Uruguay a 2-1 win over Portugal in the second Round of 16 tie at the 2018 World Cup.
The double goal from Cavani gave Uruguay a ticket to the quarter finals while it effectively ended Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal’s hope of conquering the world like they did at Euro 2016.
Cavani scored standout efforts either side of half time to cancel out a leveller from Pepe, as Oscar Tabarez's charges turned in a memorable defensive showing to reach the last eight of the showpiece tournament.
The victory sets up a quarter-final clash with France next week, who had earlier dispatched Argentina 4-3 thanks to a match-winning performance from rising youngster Kylian Mbappe.
With Saturday's result, the two best players in the world, Ronaldo and Lionel Messi have been dumped out of the World Cup and the duo are not sure bets for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
