Super Eagles captain, John Obi Mikel, arrived the training ground on Monday evening 10 minutes earlier than the rest of the squad, and trained alone.

Mikel, among other players, was criticized by some Nigerians for the 2-0 loss to Croatia in the opening game.

Apparently not happy with his performance, and willing to put out an improved game with a good result, Mikel showed how a leader takes responsibility by stepping out on the training pitch in Essentuki, and trained alone.

The Tianjin Teda midfielder practiced set pieces and worked on his pace at Monday’s training session in Essentuki. Mikel also spent time on his own on the pitch kicking one of the team’s numerous footballs and using one of the goals for target practice.

He was eventually joined by the rest of the squad and the coaches, and they trained for another hour.

The Super Eagles play their second game of the World Cup against Iceland on Friday in Volgograd.
