Russia 2018: Late Uruguay Goal Spoils Salah Party
Mohamed Salah is a year older today (Friday), aside from the well wishes that has been pouring in from across the world, the Egyptian forward was close to getting a crucial match point as the Pharaohs opened their campaign at the Mundial against Uruguay.
However, Salah who was left 'helpless' on the bench watched with despair as a late header by Jose Gimenez meant that Egypt will mark their return to the world stage with a defeat.
Uruguay were far from their best throughout at the Ekeratinburg Arena and it looked as though a series of wasted chances from record-scorer Luis Suarez would prove costly for the Group A favourites.
However, Gimenez's towering late header - which came just moments after Edinson Cavani had hit the post with a free kick - rescued all three points for the South Americans to take them level with hosts Russia at the top of the standings albeit with an inferior goals' difference.
Egypt will next face Russia while Uruguay have a date with Saudi Arabia.
