A consultant in Family Medicine at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki (FETHA) in Ebonyi State, died after Nigeria crashed out of the World Cup following the 2-1 defeat to Argentina on Tuesday.

Dr. Chidi Ebirim was said to have slumped when Argentina scored the second goal against Nigeria.

The late consultant was rushed to the hospital after he slumped, but died few hours later.

According to an eyewitness, Ebirim was watching the match at his compound but slumped when the last goal was scored against Nigeria.

“He was rushed to the hospital for quick medical attention but he later gave up the ghost. He died of heart attack because he was suffering from cardiovascular disease.”

Dr Emeka Ogah, the Chief Medical Director (CMD) of FETHA confirmed the death of Ebirim.

The CMD said he received the news of his death after the match had ended

“We are surprised at his death because he consulted at the hospital on Tuesdays. We have to wait till autopsy is conducted to draw further conclusions,” he said.

Ebirim’s death paralysed medical services at the Surgery Unit of the hospital, as surgeries slated for Wednesday were postponed.
