Croatia coach, Zlatko Dalic, has expelled striker Nikola Kalinic from the squad in Russia for refusing to come on as a substitute in their opening game against Nigeria.

Croatia was already 2-0 up when the Real Madrid player was called upon to warm up, but report in local media says the player declined.

As a result, the 30-year-old was axed from the squad on Monday.

"He was supposed to enter the game but he told me he wasn't fit.” Croatia boss said.

"He wasn't fit against Brazil [in a friendly] either, and I need players that are both healthy and fit."

The news comes amid apparent transfer talks between Milan and Sevilla for Kalinic.

The La Liga side want to bring the experienced ace in on a season-long loan but the Serie A giants are looking for a permanent £17.5million deal.

Croatia, topping Group B after first round of matches, will face Argentina on Thursday in their second game.
