Revealed: Why Gareth Bale Snubbed Manchester United
Unlike Neymar, who rejected the shadow of Lionel Messi at Barcelona and joined PSG in order to become the main man, Bale believes trophies are worth more than having all the limelight.
There were reports that Jose Mourinho was trying to encourage him to move back to England and be their star but he rejected the Portuguese manager’s overtures.
Being assured of winning trophies and playing second fiddle to Cristiano Ronaldo is better than being the star of Manchester United with less in his trophy cabinet, he suggested.
“Well there’s an argument for that,” he told the Daily Mail when asked about whether it was worth winning less to be the star.
“But I think the main thing, when you look back on your career, is that you look at your trophies. In the end that’s probably the most important thing.”
United are winners in their rights but when you consider that Madrid still looks good to win a third successive Champions League title, you will understand the difference is clear.
Things have, however, not been rosy for the Welsh.
Real Madrid have been struggling to score since the suspension of star man Ronaldo and fingers are pointing at Bale.
But he says: “I don’t really look into things like that. Some people do, some don’t. I’m not too bothered.
“I just want to go out on to the football pitch and enjoy my football. I want to do well for myself but I also want to try to help the team and win trophies. Just try to enjoy myself I think. That’s the main thing.”
