Residents Demand Justice For WAEC Candidate Stabbed To Death
When the news of the death of an innocent Secondary school girl, Chinyere Ebere, filtered into the society, there was anger on faces of residents of Ijoka area in Akure.
For the better part of Tuesday, Ijoka was besieged with a whirlwind of anguish and provocations as restive youths in the area called for the head of the bare-faced murderer of the promising young girl.
Chinyere, a 19-year old WAEC candidate was allegedly stabbed to death by 25-year old Saliu Oladapo for refusing his love advance towards her.
The incident happened on Tuesday at No 3, Obasuyi Street, Ijoka in Akure, Ondo state.
Speaking on the incident, the mother of the deceased Mrs Lovelyn Nwama said she was in her shop when a neighbour called her that her daughter had been stabbed by a young man.
“My daughter just came back from where she went to write her WAEC yesterday. I observed some changes in her, which led me to beat her before the unfortunate incident occurred.
"It was my Neighbour that called me from my shop to tell me she was stabbed by a young man in our area."
Reacting to the matter, some youths in the area said the suspect deserved to be burnt alive.
Kehinde Akinwande, an Okada rider said he the suspect is an aggressive man.
"I know him very well. He is always aggressive. He is somebody who doesn't like to follow due process. If he needs anything from you, he doesn't want to know whether it is convenient for you to release it or not. He will make sure he gets it at all cost. That is Saliu for you.
"It is unfortunate that police came to rescue him, we would have burnt him alive here."
Tunde Akintoke insisted he shouldn't have been allowed to be taken away by the police.
"Nigeria police can be very unreliable. By the time they release him, nobody will know. They should have allowed him to receive his judgement instantly.
"How can you stab an innocent girl to death just because she is not ready to date you. If you tried her and she doesn't agree based on her reason, you look for someone else who is ready to date you.
"See how he just wasted the life of that young girl for her parents. It's quite unfortunate."
One of the deceased friends who simply introduced herself as Mary wept uncontrollably as she spoke to our correspondent.
"Chinyere was a very good and compassionate friend that I can never forget easily. She once told me about how the guy had been disturbing her to date him. I even advised her to try him out but she said she doesn't have any feeling for him.
"According to her, the guy is too rough and lousy for her liking. When I heard that she is dead, I couldn't believe it because she just returned home from where she went to write her SSCE.
"So my first question was how and when did it happen? Right now, I can't hold myself together. We were too close to see her depart not even in that circumstance."
Commenting on the incident, Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr Femi Joseph who confirmed the incident, explained that the suspect was asking the girl to date him which she refused, and was said to have publicly embarrassed the suspect.
"The 25-year old man was infuriated by her refusal to date him and allegedly took a knife and stabbed her to death." He said.
He also said the suspect, who has been arrested by Police at B Division in Akure, would be charged to court for murder immediately after the police investigation.
