Repentant Bandits To Get Cash Not Jail Term
We do not know if they have served time in jail for their crimes but 27 repentant bandits in Sokoto state are set for some government largesse.
The offer came after they surrendered arms like AK-47 riffles, pump-action guns and pistols, among others in Isa Local Government Area of the state.
The Chairman of Isa Local Government, retired Col. Garba Moyi, was delighted with the bandits’ change of heart and promised to assist them with seed money to start businesses, build houses and cultivate farmlands.
“This is to facilitate their re-integration into the society through earning their living legally and contributing to national development,” he said.
Bounce News realised Moyi was only aligning with an “amnesty programme” which the state government had set up for the area.
The Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Prof. Bashir Garba, heads the programme.
Sokoto State Police Commissioner, Mohammed Abdulkadir, believes the surrender proves that the Police are working hard but the offer of cash appears to be a better reason for surrender.
It is not clear how much effort would be put into mental rehabilitation of the repentant bandits to ensure they do not go back to crime.
