After the Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Aremu Akiolu, raised his hand to greet the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, who had extended his hand for a handshake, everything about their meeting changed.

The Ooni had acted in a manner many people on social media described as civilised. The Oba of Lagos gave a snobbish salute, keeping a straight face and the Ooni withdrew his hand he was extending for a handshake and sat on his seat like nothing happened. But it was already on camera.

It looked humiliating, even the organisation that published the video described it as an insult, but no one except Oba Rilwan Aremu Akiolu can tell why he acted that way and that is a discussion for another day.

The Oba’s reaction has lived beyond that meeting to become a trend on social media, with controversies about the supremacy of the traditional rulers. Who ranks higher? Is one question that the comments seem to tackle.

Another group of persons, who do not want to take side because of their lack of reliable knowledge about the Yoruba tradition and hierarchy when it comes to traditional rulers, have made comic comments about the whole thing.
