Nobody gave them the chance when they conquered Europe as a team last time out, now Cristiano Ronaldo and his Portugal teammates are going for the ultimate which is the World Cup.

Ronaldo was in his usual element on Thursday as he powered Portugal to a thrilling 3-0 win over Algeria in their last test match before the World Cup.

Before Thursday, Fernando Santos' men had endured a run of three games without victory.

However, a double by Gonçalo Guedes and a maiden international goal for Bruno Fernandes has put Portugal on the right pedestal as they head to Russia.

In the 17th minute at Estadio da Luz, Guedes pounced on Bernardo Silva's smart knock-down to fire past Abdelkadir Salhi, before Fernandes nodded in Cristiano Ronaldo's pinpoint cross shortly before half time.

Guedes then rounded off the scoring after 55 minutes by powering in a header from Raphael Guerreiro's cut-back.

Portugal now go on to face Iberian neighbours Spain in their opening World Cup match on 15 July in Sochi.
