The lingering crisis in the Enugu State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) reared its ugly head again on Tuesday when security operatives barricaded the party secretariat to avert clashes between two factions.

The intervention of security operatives was prompted by an attempt by the Okey Ogbodo faction led by Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, to hold a meeting at the secretariat at the same time APC Youths for Buhari (APCYB) and Young Ministers of Christ For Buhari (YMCFB) were holding prayers for Buhari’s re-election.

According to eye-witnesses, shortly after the state APC Chairman, Ben Nwoye welcomed the groups that came to pray for Buhari, Okey Ogbodo stormed the party secretariat and wanted to move into the premises, but Nwoye who sensed trouble directed policemen on duty to lock them out.

There was tension at the party secretariat as the Ogbodo faction, which was allegedly in the company of suspected political thugs, laid siege to the entrance as the prayers went on.

The tension at the secretariat led to the deployment of a joint team of mobile policemen and DSS operatives to the area to forestall a breakdown of law and order.

As the tension heightened, the state Commissioner of Police, Danmallam Mohammed, arrived at the scene and mediated between the two factions.

Mohammed first spoke with the Ogbodo group and later went into the secretariat to meet with Nwoye.

When his efforts to broker peace failed, the police boss ordered the security operatives to evacuate those within the secretariat, including Nwoye and the youths who were praying for Buhari’s re-election.
